Noah Kalina Lighting Workshop 20/02/2011
Went to assist on Noah Kalina’s lighting workshop at Garage Studios on Sunday.
Garage Studios flew Noah over from Brooklyn, New York to do a talk about his work, do a series of workshops and 1-2-1 portfolio reviews.
It is always interesting when you get to meet a photographer who’s work you have followed for a number of years. Noah is a really amazing portrait photographer and I am a big fan of his work. So when I got the chance to assist on the lighting workshop, I was pretty stoked.
His portraits are often photographed on location and at times in his home studio in Brooklyn. His use of mixing natural light and strobe light has always caught my eye, but even more so his approach, compositions and use of locations that he shoots his subjects, are what make his pictures unique to him.
It’s was great to learn about how Noah thinks and uses light to make his pictures. His approach to lighting is so effortless and very often he only uses one light on his location shoots. He doesn’t over complicate with his lighting and often uses the sun as his main source as light and then use a strobe to pick out his subjects.
In the studio he has the same approach as he has outside and again tends to work with one or two lights to create his images. I can tell you, this has inspired to try and strip down from my usual 5 light set up and just try using one light again.

Big thanks to Garage Studios for the chance to assist on the workshop and thanks to Noah for such a great and inspirational afternoon.
